Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
