India's capital Rises to Hazardous Haze Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital registered an AQI above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe level recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than safe levels.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments

For the past four years, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as winter sets in.

However earlier this year, the current local government petitioned the supreme court to propose a easing of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Court Ruling and Reality

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

During Diwali, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to 70% higher the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Multiple Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the capital region is substantial, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 early deaths annually in the capital.
