Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
