Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
